What an AI assistant can do

A useful judicial AI assistant should reduce clerical reading and drafting effort without pretending to decide the case. In a document-first workflow, the user photographs or uploads the file, confirms which pages were recognised and asks for a structured working draft. The system can organise claims, responses, dates, evidence and unresolved issues while the judge retains control of every finding and conclusion.

What must remain with the judge

Authority, credibility, legal classification and the final disposition require professional judgment. The assistant must not invent a missing fact, citation or procedural event. Any authority suggested by a generative model should be checked against an official or trusted legal source before it appears in a signed decision.

The 2025 guidance for judicial office holders in England and Wales stresses personal responsibility for material produced in their name, confidentiality, bias and hallucination risk. Those principles are relevant beyond one jurisdiction: AI output is a draft, not an adjudication.

A safer working sequence

  1. Select the jurisdiction and create one case workspace.
  2. Add pages in their natural order and review the recognition status.
  3. Generate from the accepted materials even if a poor page must be supplied later.
  4. Read the draft against the record, verify every authority and correct the reasoning.
  5. Add clearer pages or instructions and refine the same case until the working draft is complete.

Questions for a court or chambers

Before adopting any tool, ask where files are processed, who can access support logs, what happens after deletion, whether model providers retain inputs and how failed pages are reported. A useful pilot should measure omitted facts, unsupported statements, citation accuracy, time saved and the number of corrections - not merely whether the prose sounds legal.

Can AI make a judicial decision?

No. This product prepares a working draft from materials supplied by the user. The judge remains responsible for the evidence, law, reasoning and final decision.

Can I use photographs from a phone?

Yes. Pages can be photographed or uploaded. The interface identifies pages that were not recognised so they can be replaced with clearer images.

Does the assistant know my jurisdiction automatically?

The English workflow asks the user to select a jurisdiction. It must still be treated as context, not a substitute for checking current local law.
